As with most of these claims, the words themselves need to be read with a little pinch of salt – the idea of honey as a cure for hay fever conjures up an image of a streaming-eyed sufferer diving into a Winnie the Pooh style “Hunny” pot for succour, which could hardly be further from the truth. However. With the word “prevention” firmly in mind, the honey hay fever cure is: take a “dose” (unspecified, one presumes a spoonful or so though if, like Winnie, the “patient” has a fondness, there seems to be no reason why a couple of rounds of toast and honey wouldn’t do) every day, pretty much all the time. It’s all folk wisdom, hearsay and a bit of hard science – the folk wisdom, take a spoonful a day well before the pollen season kicks in and all the way through; the hearsay, bees make you immune to pollen; and the hard science: pollen in honey could conceivably immunise sufferers, like a vaccine.

See, now that sounds pretty believable. Though if it were the case, one has to remind hopeful hay fever martyrs, very strongly: the honey hay fever cure, if it does vaccinate you against pollen, can logically only work if you use local honey. That is, honey farmed where you live. Why? Because that’s the only honey you can guarantee will be impregnated with the same pollen that is making your nose run. See, honey contains tiny weeny little microscopic bits of pollen – the exact same pollen, in any given area, that sufferers from hay fever will be reacting to. The theory is that by eating it regularly, those sufferers build some kind of tolerance to the pollen in question. That rather begs an inquiry into the nature of pollen allergy, of course – this reviewer had always thought that hay fever was caused by actual irritation on the surface membranes of nose, eyes and throat, in which case honey would only vaccinate you against it if you rubbed it all over your face. Still. The honey hay fever cure is a nice idea, however (and if ever) it works. And it tastes good, either way.
