The Case of the Missing Tiara   by Margaret Crum

The last time they had spoken to her she was off to Vegas with a wad of cash in her pocket and a twinkle in her eye. "I'll be back in a flash", she said before she left that Friday. This was Wednesday and still no word from Suzie, the missing Tiara. They had, however, received jokes and movies from a source that appeared to be Suzie but not one word spoken. Had she hocked all of her new furniture on that "sure bet"? They knew how she loved to gamble. Could she have stumbled onto a case of her own? They knew how curious she could be. Might she be performing with Wayne Newton or some other celebrity? Everyone knew how she loved to sing and how the audience loved her. Perhaps the mystery lay with Dan...he had won that big sum on their last venture to Atlantic City. Maybe Dan was having a lucky run and still at the tables. The other Tiaras would just have to wait...

He reached in his pocket and rubbed his lucky rabbit's foot, the same foot he had taken off that Easter Bunny last hunting season. Still his number wouldn't come up. Dan concentrated harder, "Seven, come on Seven" that was a lucky number. He looked up from the roulette table to see an Arabian Princess just steps away, the smoke from her cigarette twirling and twisting in the air like some exotic dancer. Upon her head she wore a shimmering tiara and around her ankle, another sparkling tiara charm.
"This must be royalty," he thought.

She drifted over like a cloud of smoke. Closing her eyes, she revealed the longest, darkest eyelashes Dan had ever seen. "What's your favorite number?" he asked. "Three" she replied. Meanwhile, a few tables over, the evil Scroocher sisters, Pammy and Tammy were seething with jealousy. "That's her-one of those drunken Tiaras," said Pammy, I must look away before I start drinking right now." "Won't make me want any drinks! screeched Tammy. I'm not weak, I don't drink and I like it that way. The last time I caught Donnie drinkin' I slapped his face but good! Now, let's devise a dastardly plan to eliminate those Tiaras. Stop hangin' your head, Pammy and let's get out of here before someone recognizes us."

"Number three" he bellowed as she smiled encouragingly. Clickety clack clickety clack around the wheel and the ball stopped at three. "Woo Hoo" hollered Dan. "Come on pretty lady, why don't we go back up to my room and count these winnings? I've got some of the good stuff up there." Suzie giggled and took his arm. "Can't wait," she purred.

As they started towards the elevator, she spotted the Scroocher Sisters getting on an elevator at the end of the hall. "They're here," she whispered. "I'll have to call the Tiaras for back-up."

Several hundred miles away, Sherry paced the floor, a cigarette in one hand and a cell phone in the other. "Meadows, Suzie Meadows, please check again. Placing her hand over the phone, she said to the other two, "This clown says he doesn't have a guest staying there by that name! "Well by all means, please check your list for a Dan Meadows too."

Nancy was shaking her head, "I'm telling you guys, she and Dan are playing one of those games again. They are probably registered under some exotic name instead of their own. Michael and I have played that game before," she said with a gleam in her eye.

Sliding her card into the door, Tammy pulled Pammy inside room 6969. "I think we've been spotted, Pammy. I told you to hurry but you insist on wearing those high heeled shoes. Need I remind you that this is NOT a Disco and you need to wear something sensible like me." lectured Tammy.

"Oh, I just start thinking back to those old days...remember when my hair was long and beautiful? I could really swing it at the Disco..." Pammy drifted off into a dream-like state.

"Yeah, there were rumors about you swingin' somethin' Pammy, but I don't think they were talkin' about your hair." Tammy replied her voice filling with sarcasm. "My eyebrows need tendin' to Pammy, you know I like to keep them in those little half moon shapes, now get busy!"

Meanwhile back at Tiara headquarters...Ring, ring, ring. Margaret picked up the phone to hear a clipped female's voice on the other end. "This is Private Aberly in Col. Duren's office calling for a Tiara, have I reached the appropriate office?"

"Yes, Private Aberly, please connect Col. Duren, and thank you."

In his private office on the base, Col. Duren picked up the phone. "Tiaras, you all need to hear this, put me on the speaker."

Sherry, Nancy and Margaret gathered around. "What is it, Mickey?" they all asked in unison.

"Listen Tiaras, I've been doing a little tracking and those hateful Scroocher Sisters are plotting to destroy all of you one-by-one. At this moment they are in Vegas and registered at the same hotel as Suzie and Dan and sources say they are not there to party."

"We haven't even been able to locate Suzie and Dan, how do you know they are all staying at the same hotel?"

"When you've been in the Service as long as I, you have many sources, girls, many sources. But no time for bragging, get over here to the base and quick. I have a private plane ready to fly you all to Las Vegas. We'll surprise those Scroochers with something to scrooch about."
