The Man Who Powered The Chabad Lubavitch Movement

One of the major streams of Jewish Orthodoxy, Hasidism promotes spiritual realization by integrating the esoteric teachings and practices of the Kabbalah alongside traditional teachings of the Jewish faith. Chabad Lubavitch is a Hasidic movement in the Orthodoxy that became world renown through the efforts of Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson. Although words can barely do justice to such an accomplished soul, here is a bird’s eye view of this Chabad leader’s rich life and teachings.

The name ‘Chabad’ is initialism for the Hebrew phrase ‘Chochmah, Binah, Da'at’ or ‘Wisdom, Understanding and Knowledge.’ The term ‘Lubavitch’ is derived from the town of Lyubavichi, Russia which was their base of operation until the beginning of the 20th century. Around mid-1900s, Yitzchok Schneersohn who was the 6th leader of the Chabad Lubavitch movement, established the sect’s New York synagogue. Menachem Mendel Schneerson, his son-in-law, took the reins of the Chabad movement into his hands after his father-in-law’s death and turned it into a powerful global spiritual force.

Rebbe Schneerson was born in Ukraine in April, 1902, the eldest among three brothers. At a young age, Schneerson was already introduced to Jewish law and the Kabbalah as his father, Levi Yitzchak, was a Rabbi hence, was an expert in these doctrines. Receiving tutelage from his father, he became quite adept and enamored with the Rabbinic doctrines, the Talmud and Jewish mysticism. A man of words, the would-be-leader of the Chabad movement wrote numerous essays on the fundamental teachings of the Torah during his five-year stay in Berlin around mid-1920s. He then moved to France in 1933 and learned spoken French, which was useful when promoting the Chabad movement there after the war. This French Chabad movement drew in Jews from France, Algeria, and Tunisia. In 1942, he was elected as the director of the Chabad organization’s central institution and one year after his father-in-law passed away, Schneerson was officially appointed as Rebbe of the Chabad organization.

’Outreach’ became a core strategy during Chabad Schneerson’s leadership. He not only strongly extolled Torah-observant Judaism, but also propagated the Baal Teshuva movement. To propagate the Chabad doctrines worldwide, he organized numerous trainings for Chabad rabbis. The proliferation of Chabad schools, community centers, youth camps and ‘Chabad Houses’ during his leadership is a testament to his advocacy for education. Schneerson also reintroduced Torah doctrines, adherence to kosher traditions, and practices like the use of Shabbat candles through Chabad mitzvah campaigns.

Schneerson was never one to sit idle, his seemingly indefatigable spirit is evident when he sent emissaries to safeguard Jews in Iran during the region’s Islamic Revolution and when he petitioned to Israeli legislators to pass laws in accordance with the Jewish doctrines. The seventh Chabad Rebbe was famous for his scholarship on various Jewish literatures and beliefs, especially Rashi’s commentary on the Torah. To this day, adherents of the Chabad movement believe that he is the Moshiach, the anointed one. One thing is for sure Schneerson’s spiritual legacy in the form of the Chabad following, is bright enough to last many generations to come.
