Jan 2012 It’s that time of year again – when half the population has to endure months of swollen-faced misery, going around with a constant dripping itch in the nose and that awful sensation of half a sneeze forever trapped behind the eyes.

Yes, it’s hay fever time; and high time, frankly, that someone came up, once and for all, with a decent hay fever cure.

The problem, on the whole, with most hay fever remedies is that they only work for some people. That means trawling the Internet for days and even weeks in the hope of finding a preparation or even old mother’s trick that really works: though, on the other hand, it does at least mean that if the first one doesn’t work, there are still likely to be cures out there that do. Let’s take an optimistic view of this, much like the eternal British conviction that July and August actually mean summer weather. Somewhere out there, coded in the endless highways of the Internet, there’s a hay fever cure for everyone.

So – what’s what and what’s best? Well, as we’ve just mentioned, partly what’s best is up to you. Hay fever is one of those bizarre and irritating conditions where everyone gets set off by a different thing at a different time. No common denominator. Except that everyone who gets it has a miserable time. Hay fever is generally (and basically) caused by an allergic reaction in throat, nose and eyes to specific pollens: what causes the problem, is that everyone who gets it is apparently allergic to different pollens. It isn’t just pollen, either. Some forms of fine airborne dust can spark the same reaction – and once it’s in, it’s in for a while. Day after endless day with cement in your sinuses and a face that feels like boiled lead. The hay fever cure, as a general rule, works by combating the symptoms rather than the actual root allergy. It’s very difficult to treat an allergy for itself, because even the architecture of causes for that particular allergy can differ from person to person. One person may be allergic to, say, sunflower pollen because they have a certain concentration of hormone a in his or her blood stream: while another person can be equally allergic to the same pollen because they have a lack of hormone b. And so on. That’s why one hay fever cure can work for one person but not for another.

So – the best? Try, try and try again. Check out some forums and join some communities. The best way to find out what works for you is to take the advice of people who’ve found out what works for them. That, or go for a good old antihistamine, which’ll knock the stuffing out of any symptoms you might be experiencing. Don’t use too many, though – not a good idea.
